Interviews - Bands

Hey guys, thanks for speaking to UIUK!

Billy: Thank you for the opportunity, heard a lot of good things regarding the mag and we're getting quite a response from the UK so it works out perfect.

First up, how is the tour going so far?

Billy: Amazing, just wrapped up three weeks here in states, did a ton of radio stops and played acoustic, spun a few of the new tracks.

Johnny: Always fun when we get to hit new markets and cities and meet new fans.

Can you describe your music to our readers who have yet to hear you?

Johnny: Its always been us. We've really stayed true to what makes us different. I think Frank has a unique vocal approach and we try to write around that.

Billy: Disturbed, Sevendust, Chevelle is what early reviews have compared us too. We try and write hooky memorable choruses everyone can relate too. LIAR for instance is a huge song live and 'SCORE' just destroys 'em!

You guys are all from different parts of the US, how did you form and what does each of you bring to the band?

Billy: I think thats key, weve never been stuck in a rut or all brought the same influences so it allows you to grow and layer as a band. If we all ate pizza everyday, in addition to being fat, we'd all come up with different toppings to add to our pizza. Having everyone from different upbringings and different stories brings alot to the table.

Johnny: For Billy its all about the food!

Billy: What a ______________

Johnny: Seriously we all have different styles, Im more from an 80 prog roots, like Ruch and stuff, where Billy is Motley Crue, where Dustin is Lamb of God, where Chuck is well...........greaser 50's rock-a-billy, and Frank is aggressive Pantera style. Together it blends nicely.

Do you have any unusual outside influences that affect what kind of music you play?

Billy: I think for the most part we've been doin this for so long, i think we go with what hits us right off the bat. We dont force it. Dustin or Chuck comes in with riffs and it either hits us or it doesnt. NEVER ENOUGH was one of those songs that was an immediate hit in our ears(it is not recorded on our debut as it was brought in after the recording). Nothing the guys brings in is ever bad, just not the right time and place, but we have em recorded and cut and splice for future tunes.

Johnny: Frank gives us all enough to write about!

What set up do you use?

Billy: I guess you mean our song writing formula?

The guys all have their own studios so its pretty easy for em to throw down ideas.

They lay down the bones, record 'em, hand everyone a cd and everyone comes back with the skin on the body! A lot of times the guys have a drum idea they bring and i try and copy their thought and sometimes, NOT! I feel like we have to hold Dustin back because he is into some heavy stuff and likes to noodle every song, its a choir trying to get him to let the song breath sometimes! He shreds em to death they have no chance!
This is by far the best band talent wise Ive ever been involved in. Johnny and I always say we wish we had these guys years ago.

You have a record deal with Crash Music/EMI! What is your relationship like with your label?

Billy: ummmmmm, different. I've known Mark (Crash Music President) for years, I put out about 5 cd's with a former band. EMI's dist channel is huge. Its still early in the deal, ask me again in about 6 months!

Any time your a new band on a label with vets, its always trying to say the least. Every band thinks they deserve more attention and its a business. They, the label,  focus on whats selling now, labels to dont invest the time to develope artists like they used too. The days of hard rock bands selling 10 million units are over which means label income is less which means less money to market or push the new thing. Bands need to work themselves, just because you get signed doesnt mean your work is over, just gets harder.

You've recently released debut album 'Score', where was it recorded and who produced it?

Johnny: Recorded in San Diego with two different producers. Joe Marlette (Korn, Blink 182, Switchfoot, Foo Fighters) and Matty at Sushifish. It was recorded in total over the course of a year. We worked at our own pace and wanted to get it right. There are things we will do different the next time but overall were happy just to finally get this out.

Can you tell us a little about the ideologies behind 'Score' and how does it feel to have Kicking K8 unleashed on the world?

Billy: Its redemption. The San Diego hard music scene sucks. Its all about surf rock, Sublime, Offspring, etc.. POD opened the doors years ago but nobody really kept it open. Im not saying were that band that will do it but we get far more love outside our home area than San Diego. Dont get me wrong there are people in the media in San Diego that do what they can, but their hands are tied by the powers that be to really unleash us. Case in point, WJJO Madison, Wi, little town, number one modern rock station in the country........THEY started us off. Now why can the biggest station in the country see somthing our hometown station cant? We've played every venue with the biggest bands in San Diego but we cant break through radio there? Its called fat and happy exec's sitting behind their desks and not having a clue how to run their business.

Were you in any bands prior to KK8?

Johnny: All of us with the exception of Dustin. He was a bedroom rock and roll star in the making! LOL This is his first band.

Billy: True story, we threw him in the fire fast, now look at him! I think his third show was in front of 15,000 at WJJO Band Camp.

What does the rest of 2009 hold for you guys?

Billy: Success

Johnny: Lots of touring

Is there anything else you'd like to add?

Billy: Thanks for the time, and thanks for providing an outlet for bands to expose new music.

Johnny:Thanks
